Saperavi

Saperavi (translated: dyer) is one of the best known grape varieties in Georgia. It is most widespread in the Kakheti region, where it occurs in almost all growing areas. From the dark, almost black juice of the Saperavi grapes, aromatic red wines with an expressive character in different variations are made. The Saperavi is matured in stainless steel tanks and sometimes combined in oak barrels, or in the traditional way in Qvevri. The range extends from table wines such as Telavuri and regional wines, sometimes combined with other grape varieties, e.g. Saperavi-Cabernet or as a rose wine. It continues with appellation wines with protected designations of origin, e.g. Mukuzani and Napareuli. It should be said that in addition to the aforementioned dry red wines, semi-dry (Pirosmani) and sweet red wines (Akhasheni, Kindzmarauli) are also made from the Saperavi grape. In the top class we find the Saperavi Qvevri wines or a Saperavi Reserve from the very special vintages. The Saperavi harmonises perfectly with other grape varieties, e.g. at Sesiashvili`s Gavazi Qvevri and is characterized by a very good ability for a long term storing.
